Nintendo Switch Achieves Its Best October Sales to Date

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite Sold a Combined 735,926 Units in the U.S.

With growth of 136% when compared to the same month in 2019, the Nintendo Switch family of systems saw its strongest October sales yet, with more than 735,000 units sold between Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite in the U.S. According to numbers provided by NPD, the October 2020 sales of Nintendo Switch are the second-highest October sales of any video game console in history, only outdone by the 807,000 units sold of the Wii system in October 2008.

October continues a record-setting streak for Nintendo Switch as the best-selling video game console for 23 consecutive months – the most months in a row for any video game console since NPD started tracking sales numbers. To date, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 22.5 million units in the U.S., according to NPD. And according to internal Nintendo data, Nintendo Switch has sold-in more than 63 million units worldwide.

“Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch Lite continue to provide one-of-a-kind gaming experiences on the TV or on the go, allowing holiday shoppers the choice of a video game system that matches their lifestyle,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “Seeing encouraging sales growth like this in the fourth October of Nintendo Switch proves to us that the system has many more years and great games yet to come.”

Recent releases on Nintendo Switch include Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, Pikmin 3 Deluxe and the upcoming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which launches on Nov. 20. Additionally, Nintendo Switch is home to a wide variety of games for all types of players, like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

On Black Friday, Nintendo is bundling a Nintendo Switch system with a download code for the digital version of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game along with a three-month individual membership to Nintendo Switch Online – the service that lets friends and families play compatible games together online – all in one package. The bundle will be available starting on Nov. 22 at a suggested retail price of $299.99.

Players wake from a long sleep to find that there has been an internal invasion of fake ARKS members, a mysterious enemy called “The Phantom” appears, and a new planet has been discovered in another dimension – Earth. The surprising return of Chris Redfield is just the beginning of a brand-new chapter of Resident Evil, set against a snowy backdrop.

Announced earlier today as part of the Future of Gaming digital event, I’m incredibly excited to tell you that Resident Evil Village is coming to PlayStation 5 in 2021, setting a new standard for survival horror as the eighth main entry in the storied Resident Evil franchise.

Fear is one of our greatest motivations. The traditional themes of fight or flight (and, occasionally, to freeze) when faced with danger are natural to people even as we press on into the unknown, and most of us aren’t a stranger to the looming sense of anxiety that rises from a disturbing sound or a gloomy corner.

Both the great unknown, as well as our need to explore – and be fearful of or fight for survival against what we find – is innately human. It’s what drove our ancestors to create the myths and legends we hear about to this day… perhaps because what’s really out there is significantly more terrifying and deadly than any fable.

To that end, the team behind Resident Evil Village is using its expertise with Capcom’s in-house RE Engine to bring a truly next-generation survival-horror experience to PS5. You may have caught a few bits and pieces of how the engine is being used in the enigmatic trailer that was shown during The Future of Gaming, providing ultra-realistic environments and characters that inhabit a strange, snow-capped village. We’ll let you all pick apart the trailer and speculate on the finer details of what it all means, particularly the return of a Resident Evil mainstay, but rest assured you’ll be getting a next-gen experience that only Capcom can create.

If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, go give it a watch – it’s time to dive into some of what you’ve seen in the trailer itself. If you don’t want to be spoiled, skip the next paragraph – we’ll get into some gameplay details afterwards.

Taking place a few years after the events of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, in which protagonist Ethan Winters traveled to Louisiana to search for his missing wife, Mia, Resident Evil Village sees the reunited Mia and Ethan living happily together and putting their shared nightmares of the Baker’s plantation house behind them.

Finally able to move on from those horrifying events, Ethan’s world suddenly comes crashing down once again when Chris Redfield, an unexpected yet familiar face makes an appearance, setting off a chain of events that sees a distraught Ethan seeking answers to Chris’s shocking actions… and ultimately finding him in a mysterious village.

Unlike the cramped corridors of the Baker mansion in Resident Evil 7, the fear of dark corners has been replaced with the anxiety of the unknown as Ethan searches for answers within decrepit buildings among snow-covered trees.

The return of a first-person perspective will bring a visceral edge to combat, as well. Each encounter is a personal fight for survival against terrifying foes, forcing you to keep a watchful eye on the environment and constantly looking for resources and enemies in unknown territory. With a greater focus on combat and exploration compared to Resident Evil 7, the village itself is just as important a character as any other, a location with a life of its own that will frequently keep you on edge as you discover its secrets.

Playable Worlds Raises $10M for the Creation of its Cloud-Native Sandbox MMO

Funcom Reveals New Rhythm FPS Metal: Hellsinger

Next year will have you shoot demons and devils to the beat of headbanging metal music, as developer The Outsiders and publisher Funcom are proud to announce the upcoming rhythm FPS Metal: Hellsinger.

Metal: Hellsinger is a rhythm FPS, where your ability to shoot on beat will increase your power and intensify the music. Featuring an original soundtrack with vocals from metal icons such as Matt Heafy (Trivium) and Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Metal: Hellsinger innovates both the rhythm and FPS genre with layered music. Each level will have its own song, and every song will be divided into multiple layers. Your performance will impact how many layers of the song will be played at a time, starting with atmospheric background music, and ending with powerful metal anthems.

“This gives the player an incentive to stay on beat, because the experience becomes so intense and so powerful that you want to keep it that way,” explains Funcom Chief Creative Officer Joel Bylos. “I knew that Dave and The Outsiders know how to make shooters, but I have never seen anything done quite like this before. It’s a very ambitious project and one we are proud to be a part of,” he says.

The Outsiders’ Creative Director David Goldfarb has previously been Lead Designer on Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, as well as Game Director on Payday 2. He says he has never had more fun creating a game, than he has with Metal: Hellsinger.

“We want to make this the most metal game ever,” says David Goldfarb. “Or get as far as we possibly could, anyway! To make something that felt like a tribute to the epic imagination and joy and fury of metal – not just in terms of music, but art style, characters, lore. Trying to do it has been an amazing joy and we can’t wait to get it into the world for people to play,” he says.

Metal: Hellsinger is due to release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X in 2021. The game will be optimized for next-gen consoles, with improved visuals, up to 120 frames per second, and drastically reduced loading time.

A World Apart Introduces Scenarios and More in Latest Update

The apocalypse is looking a little brighter, as Assemble Entertainment has announced an extensive new update to the highly successful post-apocalyptic city-builder Endzone – A World Apart. As part of the update, players will face new challenges in the irradiated wastelands, as they strive to build a thriving home for their followers.

The update brings new Scenarios, which introduce modified win conditions that challenge players to experience the game with various objectives that can significantly increase the difficulty of a particular play style. If you thought the unforgiving environments were tough before, it’s only just beginning.

Additionally, players can now choose between a “pre-built” playing experience with the option to start in Easy Mode, Builder Mode, or Hard Mode, or fine-tune the most minute gameplay details, such as increased instances of diseases, the population’s food consumption, and radiation levels. Book of Heroes is based on the massively popular tabletop RPG The Dark Eye, which is one of the most beloved pen-and-paper RPGs in Germany — right up there with Dungeons & Dragons! The game has you rolling up a character, creating their backstory, and heading off in search of action and adventure in the mystical lands of Aventuria — alone or with up to four friends.
